Energy Geography – economic development potentials from innovation in energy systems, markets, and strategies

REINVENT’s Teis Hansen, together with Fabian Faller (Kiel University) organised a special session at the 5th Global Conference on Economic Geography in Cologne, Germany, titled Energy Geography – economic development potentials from innovation in energy systems, markets, and strategies. It consisted of two sessions with many interesting papers.

The papers were based on the following call for papers:

The spatial organisation of power generation related processes is rapidly changing: production of energy is more and more decentralised due to renewable energy deployment; R&D for energy technologies is more and more decentralised, as various new SMEs enter the market around the world; and energy policy and strategies are more and more an inter- and supranational concern. Embedded in the western capitalist system this new energy geography is widely seen as growth opportunity for local and regional economies, as it supports the carbon decoupling of energy production, potentially allowing for sustainable industrial production, green mobility, as well as new regional value chains and energy markets. Still, we know little about the actual drivers of the new energy geography and its impact on economic development, including when and how regions may benefit in both economic and environmental terms; the relative importance of energy technology development and deployment activities in instigating economic development in different contexts; the multiple types of actors that may transform the opportunities offered by the new energy geography into economic development in various forms; and the potential deficiencies of ongoing transformations in the energy sector.

EUCalc industry expert workshop, Vienna

On July 10th 2018, REINVENT's Mariësse van Sluisveld (PBL) joined in at the EUCalc Expert consultation workshop on “Scenarios for Decarbonising European Industries”.

The workshop, organised on behalf of EUCalc by the Austrian Society for Environment and Technology (ÖGUT), was devoted to the Production and Manufacturing module of the European Calculator model.  The workshop investigated the corresponding levels of ambition and effort that reflect the full range of what experts believe could be possible by 2050.

REINVENTers at the Industrial Efficiency Conference

REINVENTERs from Wuppertal and Lund, together with the Upper Austria Energy Agency and the Swedish Energy Agency, organise a side event "Deep decarbonisation of industry – strategy & policy implications" at the Industrial Efficiency conference.

The Industrial Efficiency Conference is the most important event on energy efficiency in Europe. In 2018, it is taking place in Berlin on 11 to 13 June 2018. Topics will be, amongst others, the deep decarbonisation of industry with its strategy and policy implications. The side event will be precisely on this topic and will take place on 12 June from 16.30 to 18.30.

The session convenes policy, research and industry representatives to discuss concepts and technologies as well as innovation strategies and policy approaches for initiating long-term changes along the value chain with a focus on the energy intensive processing industries. It aims to develop this agenda with the ECEEE (European Council for an Energy Efficient Economycommunity, as a part of eceee's ambition to lead the low carbon transition, and tap into the expertise of eceee participants on industrial strategies and policy.

Further information on the conference and the side event is available here: https://www.eceee.org/industry/programme/
